10 Fun Things To Do in South Padre Island & Port Isabel (That Aren’t Just the Beach)
Things to do in South Padre Island and Port Isabel
Okay, I’m not gonna lie—when I first came to this area, I wasn’t sure about the vibe. I had heard it was just a wild spring break town, and while I knew SpaceX was setting up shop nearby, I was a little skeptical that there’d be anything to actually do year-round. It felt like one of those places people pass through on their way to somewhere else.
But after living and hosting here for the past two years, I can tell you: South Padre and Port Isabel are full of unexpected gems, local charm, and real community. Whether you’re into sunsets and seafood or horses and rockets, this area has its own quirky magic—and it’s definitely not just for spring breakers.
So whether you're staying at one of my Airbnbs or just visiting for the day, here’s my personal list of can’t-miss things to do in the area—from under-the-radar activities to iconic beach musts:
🎣 1. Walk the Pirate’s Landing Pier in Port Isabel
For just $1 entry, you can walk out onto the longest fishing pier in Texas at Pirate's Landing Pier. This is hands-down one of my favorite low-key activities in Port Isabel. It’s great for people-watching, photographing the classic shrimp boats, or just enjoying the breeze off the Laguna Madre. There’s a pirate-themed restaurant, a giant “Jaws” shark, an ice cream shop, and several fishing expeditions that leave from here.
If you’re into fishing, it’s one of the best spots in town to drop a line. Even better? Many of the local restaurants nearby offer "catch and cook" services where they’ll grill up your freshly caught fish just the way you like it. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or just here for the vibes, it’s worth the dollar.
⛪️ 2. Climb the Port Isabel Lighthouse
The Port Isabel Lighthouse is a staple of the area and one of the only lighthouses in Texas you can actually climb. It’s located in the heart of the historic district, surrounded by cute shops and local cafés. Tickets are just $5 for adults, and if you can handle the stairs (75 of them, plus a few ladders), the view from the top is so worth it.
You’ll get a full 360° panoramic view of the bay, the SPI bridge, and downtown Port Isabel. Not into heights? No problem. It also makes for an amazing photo backdrop at golden hour.
🍭 3. Visit the Lighthouse Boutique Hotel
Right across from the lighthouse is the Lighthouse Boutique Hotel, a cozy, family-owned gem that feels like something out of a coastal design magazine.
They’ve got a darling café, a well-curated gift shop with beachy treasures, and sometimes they host sip and paint nights, which are so fun whether you're artistic or not. The owners are lovely and always down for a chat. It's a great place to slow down, cool off, and pick up something cute.
🏖 4. Hit the Sandcastle Trail
This is one of the most unexpectedly cool things on the island. The South Padre Island Sandcastle Trail includes over 30 larger-than-life, professionally sculpted sandcastles scattered across SPI.
These aren't your typical beach day sand lumps. These are massive, detailed works of art made using nothing but sand and water. (Yes, I asked. No glue.) The best place to start is the year-round sandcastle exhibit right beside the Ferris Wheel on the main drag.
You’ll find sculptures of local legends, celebrities (including Elon Musk and Taylor Swift, in sand form!), and abstract masterpieces. There’s even a mini scavenger hunt to help you spot the hidden details. It’s completely free, super creative, and great for all ages.
🎈 5. Ride the Ferris Wheel & Go-Karts at Gravity Park
Gravity Park is an old-school amusement spot that never gets old. Think retro go-karts, mini golf, a reverse bungee ride, and a 60-foot Ferris wheel with dreamy sunset views.
The go-karts are especially fun because it’s a two-story wooden track that gets wild with the hills and turns—you’ll feel like a kid again. It’s a perfect way to burn off some evening energy and the whole place lights up at night, making it great for both families and date nights.
🌅 6. Sunset Drinks at Laguna BOB
There’s casual, and then there’s Laguna BOB casual. Laguna BOB is your go-to spot for a laid-back evening with live music, bar food, and an epic sunset over the bay.
Pull up a plastic chair, order a bucket of beers, and enjoy a rotating lineup of local bands (usually playing beachy tunes, country, or golden oldies). It’s an island classic and a guaranteed good time—especially with friends and flip-flops.
7. Watch Sea Turtles Hatch (Seasonal) 🐢
Sea Turtle Inc. is a non-profit rescue and rehab center that does incredible work protecting endangered sea turtles. If you’re in town from June through August, you might get lucky enough to witness a sea turtle hatchling release!
It usually happens early in the morning, and the center posts updates on their website and socials. There’s also a great educational center open year-round where you can meet rescued turtles and learn about conservation efforts. If you’re traveling with kids (or animal lovers), this is a must.
🐎 8. Sunset Horseback Riding at SPI Adventure Park
There is something truly magical about riding a horse down the shoreline while the sun dips into the Gulf. SPI Adventure Park offers guided sunset rides that are peaceful, surreal, and unforgettable.
Come early to feed the longhorns and goats at the petting zoo before saddling up. Whether you’re planning a romantic date night or a family adventure, this is a memory-maker.
🌊 9. Go to the Beach (Obviously)
South Padre has the cleanest, softest beaches in Texas, and the public access points along Gulf Blvd make it super easy to enjoy. There’s one every few blocks, with parking, walkways, and beach rinse stations.
My favorite is the one by Marlin Street, which has public bathrooms and an outdoor shower—so helpful when you’ve got sandy kids or gear. Bring a towel, a snack, and settle in for the ultimate beach day.
🚀 10. Catch a SpaceX Launch
If you’re lucky, you might be in town during a SpaceX launch from nearby Boca Chica. The best viewing spot is this quiet peninsula in Port Isabel, where you can set up a lawn chair and catch the action across the water.
Even if there’s no launch, it’s a peaceful place to sit by the waves and appreciate how close this little corner of the world is to something out of this world.
Whether you're in town for a quick weekend or a full beachy getaway, these local adventures will help you fall in love with the area like we have. And of course, if you’re still looking for a place to stay, check out my Airbnbs—we’re all about easy comfort, good design, and local tips like these. 🌴

Don't miss the framed rocket shrapnel on display, showcasing their commitment to the space motif.
Honestly, since moving to the area, I’ve made it my mission to figure out where all the good eats are. I love a good taco + marg, but even I get tired of fish tacos all day every day. At first I thought that there wouldn’t be very many good restaurants in such a small town. But having been here for a couple years now, I can heartily recommend each of these spots! With this lineup of culinary gems, your taste buds are in for a treat during your stay in South Padre Island and Port Isabel. Each of these spots offers a unique flavor and atmosphere, contributing to the rich tapestry of our local dining scene.
